1999 I flew from Jackson Mississipi where I had been for work to San Francisco via Denver. I think I saw mountains but otherwise is totally forgettable. Adding to that list is Salt Lake City during my ill fated fling with an old bf in Montana, where I would transit on my way to Great Falls, MT.
In the days before the Qantas Emirates hook up, I would fly to the UK via either Singapore or Bangkok. I reckon I have been in Bangkok airport at least half a dozen times but have never set foot in Thailand which is bonkers when I have been to nearly every other Asian countries.
When I went to Bucharest in 2017 I blithely assumed I could fly to Dubai, stay in a luxury hotel and then take the Emirates budget airline to Romania. Sadly, I discovered that Flydubai was not on my company's safe to fly list so I had to transit using Etihad which meant flying Dubai to Doha and then on to Bucharest. Flying over the very empty spaces leaving Doha, I suddenly realised that we were probably flying over Syrian airspace, at that time still a hotbed of conflict, and felt a momentary gulp as I wondered if I had my affairs in order. One the way home, I spent a few hours in Doha airport which is vast and cavernous and extremely dull.
2012 to 2014 saw me flying to Brazil a few times for work where Qantas offered only the option to fly via Auckland (another one city where I have not left the airport) and then via Buenos Aires or Santiago. Santiago was definitely the best with a beautiful view of the snow capped Andes as we landed. I also sadly forgot I would have to go through security again on the way back and had my treasured bottle of cachaca confiscated.
These days, I suspect Bangkok may be the only in reach in the next couple of years but I am determined to get a trip in this year if at all humanly possible.
I really adore Thailand. We had intended annual visits, but alas, only managed two before covid struck.
My next trip will likely be to Basel, unless Joan's plans for a big family wedding celebration in Thailand come off.
My list would be very short - Dubai only. It was my first international trip and I spent way, way too many hours in that airport. I look back and smile at how naive I was. These days I would totally book a hotel.
