I had a very similar haircut when a couple of years younger than you look to be here. It was supposed to let my natural waves turn into curls all over my head, and my mother was shocked and sad when it turned out that my nape-of-neck ringlets were limited to the nape and my hair was not going to curl all over. So maybe your mother had similar thoughts.

I like the fact that you both look quite serious in this photo and it looks as if the photographer (your dad?) has captured a real moment.
