I am in Cyprus. It's been a tumultuous couple of weeks. My sister was unwell and went to hospital in France three weeks ago. Don't come she said, don't fuss. We dithered and then we went. Good thing as we got the news it was terminal and a matter of weeks. As it happened it was days. We talked about books. We downloaded the Lacuna for her to listen to. Thanks for coming, she said. On Saturday she was gone.
She didn't want a funeral so we're gathering at my brother's house in Cyprus. I smell the wild fennel growing in the hedgerows and I weep for her passing.
