Went to see Something's Gotta Give tonight and it's left a bit of an uncomfortable taste in my mouth. Diane Keaton is luminous and Frances McDormand is lovely as her younger sister, but seeing the latter made me think this movie comes nowhere near to celebrating the sexual attractiveness of older women in the way that Laurel Canyon did. I mean McDormand sizzled in that movie with tangled hair and leather pants and the scene where she takes her top off in the recording studio to dazzle the sound recording guys with her breasts made me want to cheer. This movie seems to be pitched as a screwball comedy and Keaton is smart, funny, sexy but, gosh, she comes over so needy. I don't have a problem with her giving up Keanu Reeves for the baggy Jack Nicholson but despite the charm of the two stars it all feels without passion at the end. I mean, are we supposed to believe that love after 50 only happens because they feel a quiet companionship and she thoughtfully packs his medicines and sandwiches for his journey from the Hamptons to the city? I remember years ago seeing Reds and the hot scene where Nicholson as Eugene O'Neill tells Keating as Louise Bryant "if you were my woman, I'd never let you go". No sizzle in this movie but interesting to see Paul Michael Glaser playing Keaton's ex-husband - I 'm looking forward to Starsky and Hutch.
Good review - I haven't seen the movie and was a bit wary, but it sounds okay. And thanks for the rmeinder about Reds!
