Last Christmas I tried to sneak ham into the lentil soup but was caught out. If it were bacon, S would have no problem eating it but ham is an anathema to her. Today's snow day meant lentil soup was on the menu for lunch but I wanted one that was not too dahl like or sludgy and this one fit the bill perfectly.
As usual, orangette is a good source for soup but the original source was the NYT. Annoyingly my free trial of the food pages has been expired and they keep hounding me to subscribe but I have cooked several things from their recipes recently (the Mark Bittman pancakes are excellent. I tweaked it (of course) and added some coriander as well as cumin and a few chili flakes. I also use the mini processor to chop the onion and carrot as my knives are shockingly blunt. The lemon at the end really makes it sing.
It is thick snow outside. I took Charlie out at 7am when it was only just starting but it is pretty deep now and not many people are outside.
